What do you do when your partner announces she has a job on the other side of the world? Go with her, of course, and have the time of your life! This is exactly what happens in Snow in the Tropics, where the narrator’s life is changed and enriched as he gets to know life in and around Bangkok. But this isn’t just an account of life in one city; it draws the reader into the sights, smells and sounds not only of Bangkok but its neighbouring countries. We join the narrator on his travels as he learns the right way to wriggle out of traffic offences, how much to pay in the floating markets, and where to get the best food. Seeing this stage in life as a fabulous opportunity, he and his wife travel to Burma, learn about communism in Vietnam, encounter food and ancient customs in China and sample high-tech life in Hong-Kong. This is not just a travelogue though; it is an account not only of unfamiliar people and customs but also an insight into one man’s reactions and feelings on coming into contact with such a wide variety of human life.

    Information about Guy Snow
I was born in Kent on a fruit farm in 1929, and during the war my parents sent my brother and me to boarding schools to get us away from the bombing, first to Somerset and then to Northamptonshire. I spent a year in Canada after leaving school before joining my father on the farm. Having missed National Service on account of my occupation, I joined the Territorial Army. This life was so far removed from farming that the two week annual camp was almost as good as a holiday. I played rugby on Saturdays during the winter until I broke my leg in a skiing accident, then took up golf, which I still play with great enthusiasm and little skill. My father died in 1956, and I ran the farm until I sold it in 1989. I did voluntary work for the Citizens Advice Bureau during my retirement until we moved to Bangkok.
