A nostalgic and moving read. These stories are set in an England before the technology revolution changed forever the way we live now and as such paint a nostalgic picture of the postwar era, but with no sentimentality; mention of red telephone boxes, gas meters and the like are sprinkled throughout. However, these do not detract from the thoroughly contemporary situations where the characters play their roles, and there is nothing old-fashioned about the themes which are cutting edge, sensitive and shocking. The author has that rare ability to weave a tale that is quirky, but at the same time plausible, that makes you laugh and cry in equal measure. If you are not usually a fan of short stories I urge you to read this collection and you will be converted. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would really recommend it.
